Google is bringing more personalized Gemini help to cars

Gemini in Android Auto will be able to use Google app data, if users enable a Personal Intelligence setting.

Google is adding a more personal version of Gemini to the car, according to The Verge. The update lets the assistant in Android Auto, and later cars with Google built-in, draw on information from Google apps when drivers ask for help.

For people who use the car as a workspace between meetings, airports and client visits, the appeal is clear: fewer manual steps while navigating. The tradeoff is that Gemini’s usefulness now depends on a setting that connects it to sensitive app data.

What Gemini can now use while you drive

Google calls the feature Personal Intelligence. With it enabled, Gemini in the car can use information from Google apps including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search, according to the company.

That means a driver could ask about a flight while heading to the airport. Google says Gemini can find flight details from a Gmail confirmation and use that context to check the status. Another example from Google: asking the assistant to take you to a doctor’s appointment instead of manually searching for the destination.

Google also says Gemini can use Photos context for navigation. In one example, a driver asks it to find a car wash from a photo taken the previous week and then start directions there.

For anyone comparing AI assistants across work and personal use, this is another sign that Google Gemini is being positioned less as a standalone chatbot and more as an assistant that sits across Google services. For broader tool comparisons, see our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Google Gemini guide.

Where it will work first

The Verge reports that Personal Intelligence is rolling out to Android Auto now. Support for cars with Google built-in is expected in the coming months, according to Google.

Google previously brought Gemini to Android Auto last year, then expanded it to cars with Google built-in in April, The Verge notes. Cars with Google built-in support native Android apps, and the outlet lists Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Polestar among carmakers that have shipped newer vehicles with the system.

For small businesses and independent workers, the practical benefit is not that Gemini can answer more general questions. It is that it may be able to connect a spoken request to information already stored in Google’s ecosystem. A calendar appointment, a confirmation email or a saved image can become a navigation prompt without switching apps by hand.

The privacy setting matters

Google says Gemini will connect to a user’s apps only if the Personal Intelligence setting is turned on. The company also says personalized replies are shared only when the user’s phone is connected to the car.

That puts the feature in the same broader category as other AI updates that depend on access to personal context. The more useful an assistant becomes, the more important it is for users to understand which data sources are connected and when. We have seen similar privacy questions around AI assistants in other contexts, including ChatGPT’s Locked Chats and browser-based context features such as ChatGPT using open tabs.

Google says drivers who do not use Personal Intelligence can still use core car functions. Navigation, music, calls and general questions will continue to work, but responses will not be tailored to the user’s Google app data.

Who should pay attention

This update is most relevant to people who already live inside Google’s app ecosystem and use Android Auto or a car with Google built-in. It may be useful for:

  • freelancers driving between client appointments stored in Calendar;
  • marketers or sales workers heading to airports with flight details in Gmail;
  • small business owners who often navigate to places mentioned in messages, events or saved media.

The key decision is whether the convenience is worth enabling the setting. If your Google account contains work schedules, travel plans, client names or personal photos, Personal Intelligence makes the car assistant more capable by design. It also makes settings hygiene more important.

For now, the rollout is split. Android Auto users are first in line, while Google built-in vehicles are scheduled to receive support later. Users who want personalized in-car answers should look for the Personal Intelligence setting; those who prefer a more limited assistant can leave it off and keep the standard car features working.
