Apple 27.2 updates add Siri memory and tighter app access controls

Apple’s latest iOS and macOS updates expand what Siri AI can remember and reference, while adding a single setting to limit app access.

Apple has rolled out version 27.2 updates across its operating systems, with iOS and macOS getting the most notable AI changes. The headline addition is a more context-aware Siri AI that can refer back to earlier interactions and pull from more personal sources, alongside a new control for excluding apps from Siri, Search and suggestions.

For creators, freelancers and small teams, the update matters because Apple is moving its assistant deeper into everyday device workflows. That could make Siri more useful for finding information and taking action, but it also raises a practical question: which apps should an assistant be allowed to inspect?

Siri gets memory and more personal context

According to Apple’s iOS 27.2 notes cited by Ars Technica, Siri AI can now retain useful context from previous conversations. That means users can ask Siri about something it previously suggested, rather than starting over every time.

Apple also says Siri AI can draw on a broader set of information when generating answers. The company lists several examples:

  • Photos attached in Messages
  • Calendar event attendees
  • Voicemails
  • Safari history and Reading List
  • Better access to personal context across the device

This is the kind of change that could affect daily work patterns. A consultant might ask about a prior recommendation, a creator might ask Siri to find a detail from a message thread, or a small business owner might use it to connect a voicemail, calendar event and conversation without manually searching each app.

The tradeoff is that more useful assistance depends on broader access. Apple is not just improving Siri’s conversational continuity; it is also widening the pool of device data that Siri can reference, according to the update notes.

The new privacy lever: Excluded Apps

The most important counterbalance is the new “Excluded Apps” setting. Apple says it lets users choose which apps Siri, Search and suggestions can access from one place.

That matters because assistants are increasingly judged not only by how much they can do, but by how clearly users can limit what they see. We have seen similar concerns around AI products that use email, browser tabs or account access as context, including questions raised by Google’s AI privacy changes and personalization policies in recent coverage.

For iPhone users handling client material, personal finance records, health-related messages or confidential work, the new setting is worth reviewing after updating. The feature does not remove the privacy decision; it centralizes it. Users still need to decide which apps are helpful context and which should stay out of assistant-driven search and suggestions.

The update also adds more precise text selection for Siri responses, allowing users to copy only part of an answer. That is a smaller change, but useful for people who paste assistant output into messages, documents or notes.

Messages, Photos and media apps also get workflow tweaks

Beyond Siri, iOS 27.2 adds contextual suggestions inside Messages. Apple’s example is a dinner invitation that can be turned into a Calendar entry. On macOS Golden Gate 27.2, Apple says Messages suggestions can help users take quick action in apps such as Calendar and Reminders based on conversation context.

That points to a broader direction for Apple’s AI features: less of a standalone chatbot, more of an assistant embedded in system apps. For small teams that already coordinate work through messages and calendar invites, these features could reduce small bits of admin work, though Apple has not provided performance claims or detailed workflow limits in the notes.

Photos gains support for SynthID watermarking to help identify whether an image was generated or modified with generative tools in Photos and Image Playground. Shared Albums also adds caption and comment editing, duplicate-photo avoidance and reminders before albums expire so participants can save important files.

Other iOS additions include separate Podcasts Home sections for New Episodes and Continue Playing, friend context in the Games app, Simple Profiles in the Apple TV app, and FaceTime support for adding a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner to a call. The update also brings new Apple Music branding and previously promised Apple Pencil support for the iPhone Duo foldable.

Availability limits and what to watch next

Siri AI in iOS 27.2 applies to all iPhone 16 models and later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to Apple’s notes. Language support expands beyond English to French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.

However, Apple says Siri AI is still not available in the EU or mainland China. The same additional Siri AI languages also come to macOS Golden Gate 27.2, Apple Watch updates and visionOS 27.2, while visionOS also gets the updated Music icon.

Ars Technica also reports that beta releases of macOS 27.2 included references to gesture recognition in apps such as Photos, Notes and Safari. The outlet notes those references may relate to unconfirmed reports about touch support in a future MacBook Pro refresh, but Apple has not confirmed that in the 27.2 release notes.

For now, the practical takeaway is simple: after installing 27.2, check the new app access controls before relying on Siri AI for work. The assistant is becoming more context-aware, but that makes permission hygiene a bigger part of using it well.
